"The Word is Very Near You" (3/21)

Thought from today’s Bible reading from Deuteronomy 30-31.

For this commandment which I command you today is not too difficult for you, nor is it out of reach. It is not in heaven, that you should say, ‘Who will go up to heaven for us to get it for us and make us hear it, that we may observe it?’ Nor is it beyond the sea, that you should say, ‘Who will cross the sea for us to get it for us and make us hear it, that we may observe it?’ But the word is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, that you may observe it” (Deuteronomy 30:11-14).

Many people spend a lifetime searching for truth. They do not know where to find it, so they explore the myriad religions and philosophies from around the world as they move along their journey toward enlightenment.

Quite often, though, they either ignore or only casually examine the Scriptures. The Psalmist wrote, “The sum of Your word is truth” (Psalm 119:160). Yet people forsake the word of God and instead choose to search near and far for the truth (or what they perceive to be the truth).

God did not make His word of truth difficult to find. He revealed His word to the Israelites so they could learn it and obey it. The same is true for us today.

  • The Spirit would guide the apostles into all the truth (John 16:13).
  • The apostles would go into all the world and preach the gospel (Mark 16:16).
  • There would be a cycle of teaching which would allow the word to be proclaimed continually (2 Timothy 2:2).
  • Even if men failed to proclaim the word, we would have the seed – the word of God (Luke 8:11) – which would endure forever (1 Peter 1:25).

If we wish to know the truth, we do not need to look any further than the Scriptures. Let us take advantage of this benefit in having the word so near to us, so that we might learn it and obey it.

Tomorrow’s reading: Deuteronomy 32-34; Psalm 91
