"The Secret Things Belong to the Lord" (3/20)

Thought from today’s Bible reading from Deuteronomy 28-29.

The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our sons forever, that we may observe all the words of this law” (Deuteronomy 29:29).

This verse comes after Moses reviewed the law and the covenant with the people. Many commands and instructions were handed down, yet God did not reveal everything in His mind to man. He revealed enough for man to be faithful to Him.

What God has revealed to us, we are expected to learn and obey. We are not at liberty to pick and choose which instructions we will obey and which we will ignore. Moses told the people they were to observe all the words of the law, just as Jesus expects His disciples to “observe all that [He] commanded” (Matthew 28:20).

Furthermore, these instructions were to be taught and passed on from one person to another and from one generation to another. Paul describes this cycle of teaching to Timothy: “The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also” (2 Timothy 2:2). It is also to be done in the home so that children are raised to learn about God and His ways: “Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord” (Ephesians 6:4).

Rather than speculating and wondering about unknown and unknowable matters in which God has given no revelation, we should focus on what He has revealed, so that we can please Him in all things.

Tomorrow’s reading: Deuteronomy 30-31
