They Do No Unrighteousness (5/30)

Thought from today’s Bible reading from Psalm 119:1-88.

Psalm 119 is the longest psalm, and its theme is the word of God. David begins this psalm by telling of how blessed are the ones who keep God’s word.

How blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord.

How blessed are those who observe His testimonies, who seek Him with all their heart.

They also do no unrighteousness; they walk in His ways” (Psalm 119:1-3)

The word of God guards us from sin. David acknowledges this a few verses later: “Your word I have treasured in my heart, that I may not sin against You” (Psalm 119:11). God gave us His word so that we could know the right way and follow it.

David says that those who “walk in the law of the Lord” and “observe His testimonies” will “do no unrighteousness.” This does not mean that a child of God cannot sin. What it does mean is that a child of God cannot sin while he is following the word of God.

We sin when we violate the instructions and commandments that God has revealed for us in His word. We must understand this. Sin is the indication that we are not wholly following the will of God.

We must have the good attitude of David who chose to follow the Lord rather than continue in sin.

Remove the false way from me, and graciously grant me Your law. I have chosen the faithful way; I have placed Your ordinances before me. I cling to Your testimonies” (Psalm 119:29-31).

Will you choose the faithful way? Will you place His ordinances before you? Will you cling to His testimonies? If so, put away sin from your life and conform to His word.
