Book Review: A Bountiful Eye

A Bountiful Eye (cover)I recently had the chance to sit down and read A Bountiful Eye: Insights from Proverbs on Wealth and Riches by John Allan. As the subtitle indicates, the book examines what the wise man had to say in the book of Proverbs pertaining to wealth. This may be a topic that some Christians are uncomfortable talking about, yet it is one that the Scriptures address for us.

In the beginning, the author said this about the book:

The aim of this book is to provide a thorough, but not exhaustive, treatment of remarks in Proverbs on the topic of wealth. Although it is a short book, it is not meant to be fluff material. It should be capable of holding your attention and imparting useful information.

The book is short (less than 80 pages), so it is a quick read. But there is a lot of good commentary packed into it. He discusses the proper perspective we are to have when it comes to money – it is useful, but it should not be our ultimate pursuit in life. The book deals with the importance of diligence in our labors and being good stewards of our blessings. The author examines passages that address how we are to treat the poor, our attitude regarding debt, and the danger of “get rich quick” schemes.

All in all, this book provides a good overview on the teachings about money, riches, and wealth found in the book of Proverbs. It is concise, while still covering all that ought to be covered, and is very easy to read. This material would be useful for anyone, but I could see it being especially beneficial for young people who are getting ready to move out on their own and be responsible for themselves financially for the first time. I definitely recommend it.
