Road Trip: Introduction

Road Trip

When we hear the phrase “road trip,” we probably have a certain picture that comes to mind – one that involves an escape from everyday life, traveling to a new place, and encountering all sorts of exciting unknowns along the way. In other words, it is an adventure. Many of us enjoy these excursions and will be looking forward to the next one.

However, most of the traveling that we do pertains to our regular responsibilities in life. We will go to work, go to worship services, go to visit family and friends, go to the grocery store, and so on. Our lives are filled with routine trips like these. And while we do not think of them in the same way as we do a vacation, there are times when we encounter the unexpected on these regular outings.

Ever since mankind has been scattered over the earth, there have been travelers going from one place to another. Occasionally these are purely for enjoyment like the vacation-type of “road trip” that we might imagine when we hear that phrase; but most journeys were for mundane reasons. Yet sometimes it is during the otherwise unremarkable affairs of life that one experiences some significant event or learns some vital lesson.

In this series, we are going to look at four examples in the New Testament of people who were traveling down the road to go from one city to another. These were trips that initially would have been somewhat ordinary, yet in each of these examples the travelers experienced a significant event along the way. Their experiences are recorded for us so that we can learn from what happened on these occasions. This will be our focus in this series.

Over the next several weeks, we are going to study what happened on the following trips we can read about in the Bible:

  1. The Road to Jericho
  2. The Road to Emmaus
  3. The Road to Gaza
  4. The Road to Damascus

Come along on this journey as we discover the lessons each of these road trips are designed to teach us.
