More Desirable Than Gold (4/22)

Thought from today’s Bible reading from Psalm 6, 8-10, 14, 16, 19, 21.

The law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.

The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.

The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the judgments of the Lord are true; they are righteous altogether.

They are more desirable than gold, yes, than much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and the drippings of the honeycomb. Moreover, by them Your servant is warned; in keeping them there is great reward” (Psalm 19:7-11).

In uncertain economic times, such as the ones we are experiencing now, gold has become especially valuable. Yet there is something that will always be far more valuable than gold – the word of God.

Why is the word of God so much more valuable than gold?

  1. It restores the soul. Gold can do nothing to get us back into a right relationship with God.
  2. It makes us wise. Gold makes us rich, but riches do not last forever.
  3. It rejoices the heart. True joy does not come from riches, but from knowing that we are following the only true and living God.
  4. It enlightens the eyes. Gold teaches us nothing. The word of God teaches us all about God’s will that He chose to reveal to man.
  5. It endures forever. Gold is temporary and can also be taken away from us.
  6. It is true and righteous. Gold is neither inherently good or bad. We may use it for good or evil purposes. But the word of God is the standard of truth and righteousness.
Although gold may be one of the more valuable substances we will find here in this life, it cannot compare with the value and rewards that come from following the word of God.
