Thought from today’s Bible reading from Deuteronomy 32-34; Psalm 91.
“When Moses had finished speaking all these words to all Israel, he said to them, ‘Take to your heart all the words with which I am warning you today, which you shall command your sons to observe carefully, even all the words of this law. For it is not an idle word for you; indeed it is your life. And by this word you will prolong your days in the land, which you are about to cross the Jordan to possess’” (Deuteronomy 32:45-47).
Why has God revealed His will to man? Why did He give the Israelites all of the commands and statutes in the Law of Moses? Why has the gospel been preached and preserved for us today?
The word of God has not been revealed simply to satisfy our curiosity about certain things. It has not been given so we would have something interesting to read. The Bible is not a book that is fit only for scholars to examine on an academic level. The Scriptures are not idle or vain, they are life.
Today we have the words of Christ that do not just provide life, but eternal life. Jesus explained this:
“It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life” (John 6:63).
When many of His disciples left, Peter explained why he was not going with them:
“Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life” (John 6:68).
We need to take the word of God seriously. If we hope to have eternal life, we must follow the words which Jesus and His apostles taught.
