But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons” (1 Timothy 4:1).

This verse is the beginning of a passage in which Paul wrote to Timothy regarding apostasy. When we think of apostasy, we typically think of ones who take liberties that God has not allowed or do not obey all of His commands and instructions. This is rightly classified as apostasy. However, this apostasy (falling away) that the Spirit warned about did not have to do with one taking too many liberties, but with one taking away another’s liberties by making rules in addition to God’s word.

Liberty in Christ

2 Corinthians 3:17

Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty” (2 Corinthians 3:17).

This is a popular verse for those who like to pervert the gospel and try to condone or ignore sin. They say we have liberty in Christ; therefore, we do not have to concern ourselves with obedience or following the New Testament pattern.

Making Sacrifices

The Bible has much to say about sacrifices. Animal sacrifices were practiced throughout the Old Testament. The sacrifice of Jesus is part of the foundation of the gospel (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). We are told to sacrifice our lives for Him: “Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service” (Romans 12:1). Let us consider what the Bible has to say about the sacrifices we are to make.
