John recorded the occasion in which Jesus spoke with a Samaritan woman. Among the topics He discussed with her was worship (John 4:19-24). He told her that God is seeking people to worship Him (John 4:23). Those who do worship Him “must worship in spirit and truth” (John 4:24). We often talk about worshiping in truth – doing what God has said to do when we gather together to worship. Worshiping in spirit refers to our attitude and mindset. This will be our focus in this article. How should we approach our worship to God?

Many of the things we do in worship are a matter of tradition. Some may be surprised by that admission. They read of “traditions” being condemned in the Bible and think that all traditions must be wrong. But the fact is, not all traditions are condemned by God in His word. In fact, some are even required.

Saul’s Mission Against Amalek

Now go and strike Amalek and utterly destroy all that he has, and do not spare him; but put to death both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey” (1 Samuel 15:3).

The Lord gave Saul, king of Israel, a mission. While it may not have been an easy task, it was a simple one. It was not one that Saul could misunderstand. The Lord wanted the nation of Amalek to be punished and He sent Saul on a mission to do it. Again, this was a simple task: Destroy everything. Yet Saul’s actions in carrying out that task caused him to be rejected from being king (1 Samuel 15:26) and caused the Lord to regret even making him king (1 Samuel 15:35). Let us look at some lessons we can learn from Saul that relate to our obedience to God.
