Instrumental Music in Worship to God (Season 2, Episode 3)

One of the things that sets the Lord’s church apart from most churches of men has to do with the music used in worship. Most other churches use instruments in their music for worship. Faithful brethren have rightly opposed this for years. The practice, however, is certainly not going away. And there seems to be more and more in the church who see nothing wrong with the use of instruments in worship. Every so often it is necessary to remind brethren why we do not use instruments. To stop teaching on a topic can eventually lead to apostasy. In this episode, we will briefly examine why we do not use instrumental music in worship to God.

Thanks for this study. Once we agree instruments should not be allowed in corporate worship assemblies, where is the line then for non corporate assembly? Is instrumental music of hymns allowable for persoanl use or for events not deemed corporate worship? Do we believe there no valid use of an instrument in conjuction or accompanyment of a hymn?

  2. Thanks for the comment. That’s a good question. The passages that establish the fact that psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs are to be sung and not played on instruments (Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16) do not mention an assembly or “corporate worship.” Therefore, any time we are singing “psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs,” the instructions and implications of these passages would apply. That means that if singing hymns with instrumental music is unauthorized in the assembly, it is unauthorized outside of the assembly also.
