Does Satan Have the Power to Perform Signs Today? (Episode 11)

Plain Bible Teaching Podcast

The question we’ll be considering in this episode was submitted via the podcast question submission form:

Does Satan have the power to perform signs today?

How is Satan able to influence the world today? Is he able to do supernatural things in order to influence us to sin? Or is there another way in which he may influence us? We certainly need to be on guard against him, but we also need to understand his limitations so we can have confidence in God’s promise that we can overcome him.

The Fall of Laish

During the days of the judges, the tribe of Dan “was seeking an inheritance for themselves to live in” (Judges 18:1). Five men were sent to spy out the land and find a place they could take as their possession. As they searched the land, they found a suitable target – the city of Laish.

Then the five men departed and came to Laish and saw the people who were in it living in security, after the manner of the Sidonians, quiet and secure; for there was no ruler humiliating them for anything in the land, and they were far from the Sidonians and had no dealings with anyone” (Judges 18:7).

Then they…came to Laish, to a people quiet and secure, and struck them with the edge of the sword; and they burned the city with fire. And there was no one to deliver them, because it was far from Sidon and they had no dealings with anyone, and it was in the valley which is near Beth-rehob. And they rebuilt the city and lived in it. They called the name of the city Dan, after the name of Dan their father who was born in Israel; however, the name of the city formerly was Laish” (Judges 18:27-29).

Jesus Destroyed Satan’s Power Over Death

Jesus Crushing the Serpent Under Foot

The first prophecy in the Bible regarding the coming of Jesus was given after sin was introduced into the world in the Garden of Eden. In His curse to the serpent, God said, “And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, and you shall bruise him on the heel” (Genesis 3:15).

God was describing an event in which the seed of woman – Jesus – would be injured (His “heel” would be bruised) and Satan would be defeated (his “head” would be bruised or crushed). Remember that Satan came in the form of a serpent. We can imagine what would happen if someone were to kill a snake – one’s foot might be injured in crushing the head of the snake, but the snake would be killed. This prophecy was looking forward to the death of Christ.

Why Satan Is More Successful than the Atheists

It seems that atheists have become more militant of late in trying to persuade others to join them in their non-belief of God. While some might be convinced to convert to the atheists’ faith (atheism is most certainly a faith because it is rooted in the belief, not the provable fact, that there is no God), most will reject their teaching. If the goal is to get people to forfeit their chance at salvation, Satan is far more successful than the atheists are.

Why is Satan more successful? He has a more appealing offer than the atheists have. Case in point: I recently read an article about the Atheist Agenda group at a college in Texas. The group set up a table on campus and promised to give free pornography for anyone willing to give up a Bible in exchange. The article noted that this event which started in 2008, attracting lots of attention early on, has barely been noticed this year. The reason is simple: Very few people will surrender their Bibles and embrace atheism (or at least consider it), in exchange for free pornography.

The atheists offer an either/or proposition. You can either have the Bible or you can have pornography You can either believe in God or reject God. Satan is more successful because he does not offer an either/or proposition; he offers a both/and proposition.

The “Benefits” of Sin

Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil

Sin separates one from God and will ultimately cause one to be eternally lost (Isaiah 59:2; Romans 6:23). Yet Satan tries anyway to convince us to continue in sin to the jeopardy of our souls. He extols the benefits (or perceived benefits) of sin, too often causing even the strong to fall for his temptations.

He has employed this tactic from the beginning. In the garden, Eve was tempted to sin and eat of the fruit of the forbidden tree. Despite the fact that she understood that this had been prohibited, she still gave in to the temptation.
