This week we’re talking about the Southern Baptist Convention voting to prohibit women from serving as “pastors.” Even though much of the religious world has followed along with society in blurring the distinction of roles between men and women, an overwhelming majority voted for the amendment that clarified the SBC’s position on this. Yet the opponents of this amendment who are in favor of women pastors and preachers often cite certain women mentioned in the New Testament as “proof” that they have served and can serve in these roles. We’re going to discuss this in our episode today.Continue Reading

Notable Women and Their Role in the Early Church

Paul with Aquila and Priscilla

Over the last few decades, there has been a growing movement in the religious world pushing for women to be able to serve as preachers, pastors, or in other leadership roles within the church. In fact, I wrote an article back in 2009 commenting on a study that indicated then that the number of women pastors has doubled in a decade. This trend has only accelerated since that time.

As more “conservative” religious groups feel pressured to welcome women in various leadership roles in their churches, there is more of an attempt to defend this practice by appealing to the Scriptures. Lately, I have noticed some religious people citing certain women mentioned in the New Testament as “proof” that women are permitted to preach in any public forum, oversee a local congregation, or exercise some other leadership role in the work or worship of the church.

In this article, I want us to briefly notice some of these prominent women of the first century church and see what the Scriptures actually have to say about them. We will also be reminded about what the New Testament says about women serving in these roles.Continue Reading

Is “Complementarianism” an Essential Bible Doctrine? (04.15.21)

Plain Bible Teaching Podcast

This week we’re discussing the topic of “complementarianism” – a fancy word referring to the belief that men and women have different (complementary) roles in the home and in the church. This idea is not popular in the world today – even the religious world. Yet we need to recognize and uphold what the Bible teaches about this.Continue Reading

Social Issues (Part 4): Gender Roles

Social Issues

Gender roles are about the responsibilities that men have as men and women have as women. Most instructions in the Bible are not specific to gender – they apply to all people. But there are some that specifically apply to either men or women.

Many argue that there are no specific gender roles. They claim that there should be no difference between what a man can do and what a woman can do. On the extreme of this issue is the “feminist ideology.” In addition to confusing/changing gender roles, feminist ideology also embraces abortion, lesbianism, and hostility toward males (to include the assumption of guilt every time a man is accused by a woman of sexual assault).Continue Reading

Gender Roles (Season 13, Episode 5)

In this season, we’re discussing social issues – problems that are facing our society and what the Bible has to say about these issues.

An Excellent Wife (Season 11, Episode 9)

In this season, we’re discussing some lessons from the book of Proverbs.

Proverbs 31:10-31 describes the “excellent wife.” Rather than thinking of this description as an unattainable ideal that does not exist in reality, we should look at the character and priorities of this woman as the example that all godly women can and should follow.

The Need for Godly Women

Woman by the lake

This is a follow-up to a recent article: The Need for Godly Men. While it is true that many of our society’s problems are related to the fact that men are not fulfilling their God-given roles in the home and in society, the same is also true of women. For a long time, feminism has attacked the concepts and instructions contained in the Scriptures regarding the roles of women in general and of wives and mothers specifically.
