Plain Bible Teaching Podcast

This is the last episode for the month of September – time for our monthly news roundup. In this episode, we’re talking about generosity among Christians compared to non-Christians, the Satanic Temple suing Indiana over their abortion law, and the head of the Russian Orthodox Church’s claim that soldiers dying in Ukraine will be cleansed of their sins.

STORY #1 – Christians Are ‘Significantly’ More Likely than Non-Christians to Learn Generosity

“Christians who regularly attend church are more likely than non-Christians to say they were taught generosity and also more likely to say they have experienced generosity in their own lives, according to a new Barna survey.

“The poll of 2,016 U.S. adults found that 79 percent of ‘practicing’ Christians say they were taught generosity by someone, while only 58 percent of non-Christians answered that way. Barna defines ‘practicing Christians’ as believers who attend a religious service at least once a month and say their faith is very important in their lives. Among all U.S. adults, 65 percent say they were taught how to be generous by someone.” (Christian Headlines)

STORY #2 – Satanic Temple Sues Indiana Over Abortion Law, Claiming It Violates Religious Rights

“The Satanic Temple is suing the state of Indiana on claims the state’s near-total abortion ban violates the rights of its Hoosier members who want abortions after their birth control failed.

“A lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana by the Massachusetts-based religious association says it brought the lawsuit on behalf of anonymous women from Indiana who say they became pregnant by accident despite using contraceptives.

“Under Indiana’s new law they would not be able to get an abortion, according to the lawsuit.” (Indianapolis Star)

STORY #3 – Russian Church Leader Says Soldiers Can Cleanse Their Sins by Dying in Ukraine

“In a newly released video, Patriarch Kirill, head of the Russian Orthodox Church said that Russian soldiers who die on military duty in the war against Ukraine will be cleansed of all their sins.

“Kirill, a key ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, spoke just days after a partial mobilization of reservists ordered by Putin to bolster Russia’s forces in Ukraine.”

“‘We know that today many are dying on the fields of internecine warfare. The Church prays that this warfare will end as soon as possible, that as few brothers as possible kill each other in this fratricidal war,’ Kirill continued.

“‘And at the same time, the Church is aware that if someone, driven by a sense of duty, the need to fulfill an oath, remains true to his calling and dies in the line of military duty, then he undoubtedly commits an act that is tantamount to a sacrifice. He sacrifices himself for others. And therefore we believe that this sacrifice washes away all the sins that a person has committed,’ he concluded.” (CBN News)
