Seated at the Right Hand of God

At the beginning of the book of Hebrews, the writer began by reminding the brethren that Jesus was God’s spokesman for “these last days” (Hebrews 1:2). He then explained how Jesus was qualified for this position:

And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high” (Hebrews 1:3).

In this short article, I want to focus on part of this description of Christ. So for a few moments, I invite you to consider with me the last part of this verse: “When He had made purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.” If we understand this phrase, we will have a fundamental understanding of the gospel of Christ and why His new law is superior to the Law of Moses.

Making Wise Investments (Part 4): The Great Gain of Godliness

Making Wise Investments (Part 4): The Great Gain of Godliness

Why do we serve God? Different people will have different answers to that question. Yet not all of them will have the right motivation. Some are motivated by material gain – a better life now. We sometimes use the term “health and wealth gospel” to refer to the message that is tailored to this group’s desires. Others are motivated by spiritual gain – a better life in eternity. Many are motivated by a combination of the two. In this lesson, we will consider Paul’s words to Timothy in which he warned of the danger of being motivated by material gain and he explained what is the great gain of godliness.

But godliness actually is a means of great gain when accompanied by contentment” (1 Timothy 6:6).

Why Were They Prophets of Baal?

Elijah and the Prophets of Baal

1 Kings 18 records the familiar story of the contest between Elijah and the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel. I will not take time in this brief article to review the account. If you are unfamiliar with it, I encourage you to read of the event in 1 Kings 18:17-40.

When we consider this contest, we often focus on Elijah with his great example of faith and willingness to stand alone for God with 450 prophets of Baal opposing him. We also sometimes consider the people’s unwillingness to commit to following either God or Baal. But in this article, I want us to consider the prophets of Baal themselves and ask the question: Why were they prophets of Baal?

Making Wise Investments (Part 3): The Pearl of Great Value

Making Wise Investments (Part 3): The Pearl of Great Value

In the previous lesson, we considered the value of the truth – the word of God – and why we should buy it and not sell it. In this lesson, we will consider something so valuable that Jesus talked about the wisdom in one selling everything that he owned in order to buy it. The thing which He said was so valuable was the kingdom.

Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking fine pearls, and upon finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it” (Matthew 13:45-46).

9th Year of Plain Bible Teaching

Plain Bible Teaching officially launched on August 1, 2005. Yesterday wrapped up eight years, so today is the start of the 9th year for this site.

So on this site’s anniversary, let me take a brief moment to thank all of you for reading. I hope my work here has been, and will continue to be, helpful to you as you study the Scriptures.

Also, an additional note of thanks to those of you who have offered words of encouragement and support along the way. It’s not always easy to keep a project like this going consistently for so long. Your support has been a big help along the way. Thank you.

Now as we begin the 9th year of Plain Bible Teaching, I hope that this site continues to be a source of encouragement and instruction and that God may be glorified through these efforts.

Making Wise Investments (Part 2): Buy the Truth

Making Wise Investments (Part 2): Buy the Truth

Our first lesson dealt with the value of the soul. Without understanding this, the other points in our study are useless. But now that we understand the value of the soul, how should we care for our soul? In this lesson, we will consider the importance of possessing the truth.

Buy truth, and do not sell it, get wisdom and instruction and understanding” (Proverbs 23:23).
