They Were Offended

Many of the Pharisees opposed Jesus while He was on the earth. On one occasion, they questioned Jesus about why His disciples broke “the tradition of the elders” by failing to “wash their hands when they eat bread” (Matthew 15:2). Though there was nothing wrong with the practice of washing one’s hands before a meal, they had elevated this human tradition to the same level as divine instruction. This was a problem and Jesus was willing to expose it.

In responding to their question, Jesus asked them about another tradition. However, this tradition was not harmless in itself. Instead, the tradition about which Jesus questioned them directly violated the commandment of God: “Why do you yourselves transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?” (Matthew 15:3). He went on to explain how their tradition led them to forsake the command to “honor [one’s] father and mother” (Matthew 15:4; cf. Exodus 20:12). They had “invalidated the word of God for the sake of [their] tradition” (Matthew 15:6), thus making their worship “in vain” (Matthew 15:9).

It is important to notice what happened next as it has a direct application to our efforts to teach the truth.

Notes & Observations: Plans for 2014

I had originally intended to post this on January 1st. But time has gotten away from me and here we are almost a week into the new year already.

My plans for this blog are not yet set in stone. I am hopeful that at some point this year, I will have more time to devote to my work of preaching and teaching. Until then, I will need to keep a lighter writing schedule than I would prefer. But I still plan to work on some projects that I will post here. As of right now, my plans include the following:

  1. Restoration history – I plan to resume my articles about lessons to be learned from a study of the Restoration Movement. I hope to post one such article a month.
  2. Parenting series – Beginning a few weeks from now, I plan to begin preaching a series on parenting. These lessons will also be produced as articles and posted on this site.
  3. Sermons in the book of Acts – Sometime in the coming months I want to do a series examining the sermons that are recorded in the book of Acts.

I don’t have firm dates for when I plan to post this material. The best way to stay up to date with new content is to subscribe to the free email updates. Once you sign up, you’ll get an email whenever there is a new article posted to the blog.

Depending on how this year turns out, I may be able to post more material than what I have listed above. We will have to wait and see on that. But I do thank you for your continued interest in the material I put together here. I hope the new material will be helpful to you as you continue to “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18).

New Year’s Resolutions: Start, Stop, Improve

2014Often when people make New Year’s resolutions, they begin with the words start, stop, or improve (or synonyms of these words) – start exercising, stop smoking, improve spending habits, etc. As we grow and mature, it is good to improve in all areas of our lives; but it is particularly important to improve our spiritual lives. So as we begin a new year, I want to suggest some resolutions for all of us to consider as we seek to please the Lord.

Some Things Never Change

Man on a Mountain at Night

As one year quickly draws to a close, it is customary for us to look back at the changes that have taken place in our lives and look ahead to changes that may be coming in the future. While our lives are filled with change, it is important for us to remember that there are some things that never change. In this brief article, I want us to be reminded of a few of these.

The Abundance of One’s Possessions

Christmas giftsDuring the holiday season, it can be easy to become distracted by the “things” of this life. Instead of focusing on one’s blessings and being grateful to God for them, many people choose to focus on the things they do not have. There is certainly nothing wrong with enjoying the blessings of this life. There is also nothing wrong with giving gifts to friends and family. However, we need to keep everything in the proper perspective. We must avoid jealousy, discontent, and materialism. Failing to avoid these attitudes can ultimately lead to eternal destruction.

Jesus warned about such a misplaced focus when he spoke with a man who was jealous of his brother. Afterward, He used the opportunity to expand upon the issue in a familiar parable.

Someone in the crowd said to Him, ‘Teacher, tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me.’ But He said to him, ‘Man, who appointed Me a judge or arbitrator over you?’ Then He said to them, ‘Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed; for not even when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions’” (Luke 12:13-15).

“We Are Unworthy Slaves”

Luke 17:10

Much of the denominational world is under the heavy influence of Calvinism. As a result, many people believe the false concepts of unconditional election and irresistible grace. Because of this, they object to the teaching that obedience is necessary for salvation – even though this is what the Bible teaches (cf. Hebrews 5:9; James 2:24). They argue that if one believes that salvation is conditioned upon obedience, then that one must believe he can “earn” his salvation. Yet this is not the case. Notice what Jesus said in the following passage:

Which of you, having a slave plowing or tending sheep, will say to him when he has come in from the field, ‘Come immediately and sit down to eat’? But will he not say to him, ‘Prepare something for me to eat, and properly clothe yourself and serve me while I eat and drink; and afterward you may eat and drink’? He does not thank the slave because he did the things which were commanded, does he? So you too, when you do all the things which are commanded you, say, ‘We are unworthy slaves; we have done only that which we ought to have done’” (Luke 17:7-10).

Jesus’ words in this passage are helpful in showing us the connection between grace and obedience. So let us briefly examine this passage.
